3 Ways You Can Recycle Your Gas Lawn Equipment in Falls Church
Anyone who’s ever had a lawn mower die knows it can be a challenge to dispose of it.
But did you know that you can now recycle gas-powered lawn equipment right in Falls Church City?
To help speed the transition to quieter, cleaner electric lawn equipment, the Falls Church Climate Action Network (FCCAN) is helping City residents recycle old lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and trimmers.
Here are 3 Ways Falls Church residents can recycle gas-powered lawn equipment, from easiest to a bit of a challenge:

Easiest: Drop Off Your Lawn Equipment at the Recycling Extravaganza on Saturday, Oct. 4
For the first time, Falls Church residents can drop off gas-powered lawn equipment for recycling at the annual Recycling Extravaganza on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2025.

When: Saturday, October 4, 2025 | 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: 217 Gordon Road
IMPORTANT: All lawn equipment dropped off for recycling must be drained of fuel and oil, which can also be recycled at the Recycling Extravaganza’s household hazardous waste area.

2. Medium Effort: Recycle Lawn Equipment at I-66 Transfer Station
Falls Church City residents may also recycle gas-powered lawn equipment and the related hazardous material at the Fairfax County I-66 Transfer Station, a.k.a. “the dump.”
As of September 2025, the I-66 Transfer Station accepts hazardous waste every day of the week except for Wednesday. Check the I-66 Transfer Station's website for operating hours.

3. Level Up: 5 Steps to Recycle Your Lawn Equipment at Falls Church Recycling Center
Did you know that you can recycle gas-powered lawn equipment right here in Falls Church? Here's how:
1. Drain all fluids, including gas and oil, into appropriate containers. Hazardous materials are accepted at the annual Recycling Extravaganza or at the I-66 Transfer Station in Fairfax.
2. Remove all gas and oil caps. Reuse what you can and throw away any rubber and plastic parts you can’t use. Remove cords. eAsset Solutions (427 N. Maple) accepts spark plugs and wire components for recycling.
3. Puncture all empty fuel and oil tanks.
4. Remove any batteries and electronics, and recycle separately.
5. Recycle your equipment’s metal parts in the Recycling Center's (217 Gordon Road) scrap metal bin, or you can sell them to a scrap metal dealer such as RRT Metals (8117 Ransell Road in Merrifield).
